New consignment store offers upscale fashions for men and women

There are lots of consignment stores in Central Florida, but very few offer men’s clothing and accessories.  And not many offer consignment shopping in a true boutique atmosphere.

Selective Designs’ interior

The newest consignment store to open in the area offers both: men’s fashions and a carefully-edited selectionof clothing, shoes and accessories in a clean, bright shop. It has plenty of women’s upscale items, too.

The shop is Selective Designs. It is the creation of Peter Pena, who previously worked for Christian Dior, and Gerard Barnard, owner of the Gerard Barnard Salon in Winter Park. In fact, the consignment store is located right next door to the salon, at 1801 Oglesby Ave, (just off Clay  St., near Fairbanks Ave.).

The idea, says Bernard, was to create a high-end shop with the feel of a SoHo or Chelsea boutique.  He and Pena are “very selective” about the quality of items in the shop. They also display a limited amount of merchandise to avoid that ‘crammed-in” feeling common to many consignment stores.

New handbags

In addition to consignment fashions with labels ranging from Louis Vuitton and Gucci to Chico’s, Selective Designs carries new handbags and jewelry (at really reasonable prices), and a line of hand-painted unisex T-shirts embellished with Swarovski crystals designed by Pena.

The men’s selection includes jeans with labels such as Seven, Rock and Republic and Diesel (selling for just $20-$30!), cargo pants, suits, dress shirts and pants, and shoes.

Consigning is done in a private back room, with a 60/40 split favoring the shop. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

Where else can men find consignment clothing? A good bet are the Classic Consignments stores at 515 S.R. 436 in Altamonte Springs (407-331-7150), and at 1040 S.R. 436 at Red Bug Lake Road in Casselberry (407-265-2200).
