Ordinary, opinionated and wonderful!
Lets see some great looking fashion for ordinary women and yes middle aged women too! And while we are at it lets get them up there on the catwalk strutting their stuff.
Thats what Edinburgh College of Art have been working on as part of the All Walks Beyond the Catwalk initiative that replaces docile tailors dummies with real and opinionated women who gave the students crucial feedback about their designs.
As co founder of this initiative Im confident that a project such as this can lead the way.
And as these great looking designs show, creativity is not compromised. Emotionally considerate design is possible AND working on a model with a realistic body shape is a necessity.
The fact is ALL WOMEN apart from the odd catwalk model have ordinary bodies and design students have to understand the needs of ordinary women if they are to make a lucrative business!
Mal Burkinshaw course leader at Edinburgh College of Art has created this project in conjunction with All Walks, and feels it has made a huge impact on the learning of the students.
Mortwenna Darwel one of the students agrees, I gained a much better understanding of the relationship between real women and fashion.
Jennifer Alexander says I feel Ive learned a lot from fittings and communicating with my All Walks muse, from this project onwards, I will take into consideration who I design for and how my garment will make the person feel.
Music to anyones ears!
