Costume Couture
We can’t get enough of the playfully chic collection of costumes from Simon Doonan—beloved fashion expert, designer and author. So, we caught up with Doonan to ask him a few questions about these haute Halloween creations that have captured our imaginations. – The Target Style Team
What was the inspiration behind your costume collection for Target?
I took inspiration from the runways. People are now so into fashion that I thought it would be great to look at Halloween through the lens of style. Everyone wants to look glam and red-carpet ready—see my A-List Celebrity costume—even on Halloween. I also took inspiration from reality television. I like the fun and naughtiness of shows like The Real World and Tool Academy and Jersey Shore. I wanted some of that silliness and unpretentiousness.
What pieces of the collection are you really excited about?
The fashion/glamour part is familiar territory for me, so I am excited that I was also asked by Target to create costumes for kids and pets, like Candace Corn and The Pet-arrazi. It was challenging and rewarding to think about what kids might wear, and also my pooch! I asked my 6-year-old nephew what he wanted to be, and he said “A DJ with wheels of steel.” So, I created the DJ From the Crypt!
How would you suggest guests wear and style each of your designer costumes for Target?
If you are going to wear the Glamour Ghost, then you need a fierce pair of shades like Rihanna. If you are going to be a Diva Witch, then don’t forget your black stilettos and a good pair of fishnets. Try some more daring make-up: if you’ve never worn false eyelashes before, then give them a whirl. If not at Halloween, then when?
If you had to choose one of the costumes from the collection to wear yourself, which one would you choose and how would you style it to be uniquely Simon? I would wear the Pumpkin Punkrocker. I lived in London in the ‘70′s when punk exploded—I could relive some of my crazy youth. This is a great costume for easy embellishment: you can add safety pins and chains and make it jangle so people can hear you coming from miles away! This is a good thing!
