Chic Coats to Cut the Winter Chill

Shopping for a new coat this season? Here are five of the top outerwear trends that we’ve been eyeing. They make it easy to look trés chic when it’s chilly—sans the high price tags.

Military Coat

These statement coats feature authentic detailing, such as oversized novelty metal buttons, epaulets and utility pockets. Double-breasted, army-inspired silhouettes—in both long and short lengths—can have either a trendy or more traditional look, like the pea coat. Olive is the new color, but navy, heather gray and khaki are classics.

Moto Coats

Choose short, fitted jackets with asymmetrical zippers and metal hardware for an authentic look. Wool versions are the newest take on biker and motocross jackets. Longer toppers maintain that sleek, edgy look of the originals but can better brave the cold. While black is classic, try light heather gray for something new.

Utility Parkas

Parkas aren’t just for the slopes anymore. For fairer temps, go with the Utility Anorak complete with a hood, drawstring waist and colorful linings. Puffer jackets with a belt detail and demure quilting show off your shape while keeping you extra toasty. Khaki green, blue and black are all great colors for these coats.

Faux Fur

This isn’t your grandma’s fur coat. For cozy work attire, go for a neutral-toned faux-fur coat or chubby vest in lieu of a traditional sweater, or try them with jeans and a T-shirt for a casual uptown look. If you’re looking for something luxe, try an iconic leopard print. Shearling pieces, like the aviator jacket, are this season’s must-haves.

The New Classics

Traditional silhouettes and redefined classics are hot items this season. Time-honored American styles like the trench coat, toggle coat and long, feminine collared coat were runway staples. In a camel tone, these basics are chic, refined and flattering. Heather gray, black and navy are also great mainstays.
